The Afflecks Owned Slaves

Ben Affleck, from an old American family, has ancestors who owned slaves.

Oh.

And he asked for and received censroship of this fact.  W T F ?!!??

It is never the facts, it is always the cover-up.

Ben Affleck persuaded the producers of Finding Your Roots to edit out details of how his ancestors were slave owners even though it was a breach of PBS editorial rules.The new Batman star, who supports a number of liberal causes, objected to the ancestry TV show airing how his distant relations were racist, leaked Sony emails reveal.

So what?! If you are long term American, your family probably owned slaves, if you were the right people.  Here is a bill of sale for some slaves my ancestors auctioned off.  On Christmas Eve.



Hell, the Spiers were so tied up in slaves court cases got involved:

Back to that bill of sale...  the Spiers were rich and connected.  A man's sins unto the third and fourth generation...."  We were wiped out four generations after that.

I teach my kids two lessons:

1. Don't worry what crimes your ancestors committed that were "OK" at the time, what crimes are YOU committing now that are "OK" at the time?

2.   Don't fool yourself, all you gain will be lost if it is crime-based.

“We deserve neither credit nor blame for our ancestors,” he wrote, “and the degree of interest in this story suggests that we are, as a nation, still grappling with the terrible legacy of slavery.”

Nice diversion, Ben.  The question is not slavery in your case, it is integrity.   The controversy is that you were given the censorship you requested. And now the brand is shot, knowing that the raison d'etre of the show is contrived.

Again, Ben, what crimes do you engage in today that are "OK" today, but will be appalling in the light of cold history?  Think ben, think!

If you read the Commentary on the passage, it seems to say how to behave outside of actual war, since most soldiers in history are rarely in actual battle.  In essence, these conditions cannot be met, therefore...

Further, as people cannot pay for the wars we advance, we are visited with violence to collect the money.  Extortion may have been a common problem, but I think it is contrary to the whole culture of violence of a standing military.

Catholic Snipers: My Jesus is Bigger

I think of General Boykin who famously noted his God was bigger than Islam's God when I read the thoughts of pro-war Catholics.  The Jesus described I imagine to be a teentsy-weentsy Jesus, with a tiny, squeaky voice...  “Existential threat by Islam! Clash of cultures!” 

My Jesus is so much bigger, H U G E !  He healed the sick, overturned an economic system, raised the dead and when the Romans answered with shock and awe: Ecce Homo! INRI... he transformed life and the world in which we were once bound.  Raised himself from the dead!  Now we could be free!

My Jesus, who is so much bigger than the Jesus of the warmongers,  can also be so subtle.  When American Catholics are insensitive the the unceasing begging of prelates across the middle east NOT to attack their countries for the hell it will bring on them, Catholics in the commanding heights of the USA Wehrmacht soldiered on.  In light of this, Jesus raises up a pontiff named Francis, in memory of the Saint who got Islam relations right.

If the greatest Christian saint since the time of the apostles had opposed the Crusade and peacefully approached Muslims at a time when they were supposed to be mortal enemies, that action can inspire and instruct us today. So should the fact that al-Kamil, a great sultan of Egypt and a nephew of Saladin, was so tolerant of Christians that he allowed one of them to preach to him in the midst of a Crusade. Now note the kinds of articles NCR does carry.  I am not making this up: Catholic and Killing for a Living.  A paean to snipers.  Read it for yourself, don’t trust me.  (Incidentally, with 74 comments highlighting weak anti-war vs strong pro-war comments, a tedious editorial tactic, my comment as a Vietnam era conscientious objector is not approved by the moderator.)

Now here is the money shot, literally:

Get it?  Look at the banner ad above the masthead.  Ka-ching!  Military ads in a pro-life rag. Note the poverty draft pitch:  In a country that inherently disrespects black lives as of no matter, you can get respect by joining the army.  And see below, Catholics can be snipers!  And enough money to send you six free issues.

A service of EWTN.  Such content producers as “Sacred Heart Radio” And “Ave Maria Radio” rock the “existential Islamic threat” and “thank you for your service” tropes, and just seem to gain all of the ads.  And those other Catholic media languish for lack of advertising. Our government picks and chooses what media it favors, so why not Catholic media?   And why wouldn’t they eventually find people who want to be successful, measured in money, if not ratings?

About six years ago there was one Catholic business adviser program, where the host apologetically went over  Church teaching and USA actions in the middle east and plaintively begged his audience to call in and tell him where his reading of the facts was wrong, that the USA was the unjust aggressor in the middle east wars?  Crickets.  Not that audience.  I kept tuning in, but sadly, he whose name I no longer recall, was gone.

I know something of online advertising, usually those ads are targeted to the audience, and it is rather pointless to offer me a position as a pro-war chaplain: the gross exposure rate costs more for the advertiser.  These ads are what makes one publication more viable than another, and guess who gets such ads?  Pro-war Catholic press.

When EWTN talks about NFP and pro-life (anti-abortion) I could not agree more.  And the powers that be could care less.  Abortion is a marginal issue in American politics, and the Catholics who matter to the powers that be, politicians, are all solidly pro-abortion, bought and paid for.

Now, to the powers that be, war matters, and there is a solid Catholic anti-war ethic latent that must be starved for oxygen.

Yes, EWTN is putatively pro-life (on the narrow abortion question) but there is no seamless garment...  even on the question of torture, when the Pope expressly condemned it, Al Kreska allowed that among the panickers after 9-11, it was understandable to employ torture, not questioning whether we should have a system where panickers make the decisions.   Further, he will not extend the same flexibility to a young woman in a panic who has an abortion.  The former is no sin in Kreska's world, the latter must be confessed or to hell you go, in the milieu well funded by the hegemon.

Such hypocrisy dissuades people of good will, who want to hear a seamless garment argument on pro-life to keep looking, since prominent Catholic media is not about to offer it.

A Patrick Coffin on his show was interviewing the new director of gay whatever, a former marine, who in reply to Coffin’s direct question on whether torture is ever warranted, his guest noted they were convicted, and punishment may be laid on convicts.

This non-sequitor was allowed to pass by Mr. Coffin, but then, he is clearly uneasy about Church teaching, this the host of Catholic answers (Cafeteria Catholic answers?)  And oddly, Coffin had announced that for this segment, no call-in questions would be taken.  A unique arrangement for a call-in show.

When it comes to ratings, proof of popularity, his website offers:

Wait, who? Ah yes, that arbiter of Catholic excellence, the self-selected group of those who avail themselves of about.com.  Where no doubt a dozen likes gets you into the winners circle.

My experience is you can tune in just about anytime to EWTN and get a good dose of anti-Muslim blood slander.

I was in the audience at St Monica's Church on Mercer Island, Washington circa 2006 when Fr. Mitch Pacwa, a eastern Jesuit fluent in various Semitic languages was peppered with questions  regarding “ is Islam inherently evil” “Can Muslims be good citizens?”  Oddly the lecture was given in the Church proper, so I refrained from asking Fr. Pacwa if Christians can be good citizens.  Prudence dictated I not introduce contradiction in the sanctuary.  But I think I observed a change in Fr. Pacwa, to what you hear now from him on EWTN.

If Jesus wanted to advocate war in the clash of cultures, never before or since in history did anyone have a better chance for an attentive audience.  Indeed, he was betrayed and abandoned by those who expected to prevail by the sword.  Just as in USA today.

Now back to this Pope named Francis. Not only would it be a rebuke to the American Catholic Church, or the Church of America, at the same time such a Pope would be an inspiration to the vast swathes of Catholics worldwide who are appalled by USA actions, and assume Catholics are a witness to the truth, not players in the violence.

Saint Pope John Paul II issued a controversial vade mecum in which he cautioned confessors not to convert penitents from informal sin (say artificial birth control)  to formal sin (actively rejecting church teaching on same) if in the discernment of the shrive, the penitent is not well catechized enough to embrace the truth.  Bring them along easy, over time, toward the truth.

I wonder if pro-war catholics would remain Catholic if the bishops named USA war crimes for what they were.  Pre-emptive strike is a named war crime, not a matter of prudential judgment.  Sure, Weigel et al can claim it as such, but no, it is a mortal sin.  Would Weigel and others leave the Church, as surely as a Biden or a Pelosi, if told in no uncertain terms that certain actions are mortal sins?

Glad I am not a Bishop, as are countless others.  I'd push it, and not worry about the cross.

Gun Control: Disarm Police

Criminals study police response times and crazies head for "gun free zones" to do their crimes.  This is the other side of the coin where people believe the police will serve and protect them.  What we get is a certain personality among police officers.

This should be studied more, but comes a researcher:

It appears that a person is three times safer with a concealed carry permit holder than they are with a police officer.

This does not surprise me, but it should be verified.  So what if it is true?  Then disarm police officers.  Have them serve and protect without weapons.  Like in the UK.  The murder rate will not go down, but  population that is drawn to police work will change.  And those more inclined to murder will not become police officers.  Because of different kinds of people becoming police, there would be less murder by police.

Well, then who confronts the bank robber and the crazy.  Either you, or a private guard you hire, just as it is in most situations where security is important.

When the bad guys cannot plot out police response times, and the crazies have no idea who will bust a cap in their head, because of just a few concealed carry citizens, we are all safer.

If we begin gun control, start with the police.

First Rate Propaganda

When the Nazi's were losing the war, they took the time to make a movie about the German ability to pull victory from the jaws of defeat.  It is an excellent example of first rate propaganda...  scene by scene it seamlessly answers all of the doubts Germans might be having.  And you don't need to speak German (or French) to get it.

The other part is it had to appeal to both the martial Prussians and the Catholic Bavarians.  The scene where the fraulein visits the queen is pure Marian Apparition iconography.  An amazing piece of work.

Private Security Systems

There is a large body or work on the topic of private security systems written by libertarians, featuring private police forces and private armies.  Pretty interesting stuff, but the fatal flaw is as people aggregate power they abuse it.

So how do you enforce any standards when

A.  There are no common standards?

B.  There are no cops?

Well, the Amish show how, of course.  And so does the USPS.  That's right, the post office.

You see, just as there are not enough people in USA to inspect food contrary to the stated mission of the FDA, there are not enough humans in USA to deal with the sole problem of dogs threatening letter carriers.  If we sent in people to deal with this problem, given the minimum requirements of state intervention (officer safety, secure the perimeter) there would be no time for any other USA citizen to do any other work.

So how does the USPS manage this problem?

USPO workers shun neighborhoods with dangerous dogs.  A letter carrier complains to management about the dangerous dog, and management then stops delivery of mail to that block.  The people on that block contact the postal service and complain.  The postal service informs them they cannot and will not deliver mail as long as there is a dangerous dog on the block, so the homeowners are now obliged to visit the post office to pick up their mail. 

Of course, in time, one way or another, the dog disappears, and the mail resumes.   

In this way there is no need to bring in other governmental agencies, such as animal control, or the police, which in either case would probably have little effect, since it is not against the law to have a dangerous dog (although a foolish liability to own one).

The USPS has little problem now with dangerous dogs, because, Amish style, community action deals with the problem. The benefit is cumulative, for the problem was nipped in the bud long ago and has no chance to flower.  We do have ways of living without this recent introduction of police forces.

Selling Homosexuals Down the River

I object to state power because I see what it does.  I know if I had it I would be every bit as corrupt as those who do have it.  Then there is the flipside, the citizens who are corrupted by the acts of the powerful.  I call it "selling people down the river.

Selling people down the river is nothing new.  As often is the case, the Bible has several early examples, such as when Abram said his wife was his sister, or more literally when Joseph's brothers sold him down the river.

We can pick anytime in history, and see Irish selling Irish down the river, Congolese selling Congolese, and so on.  It happens when state power distorts normal human relationship balances.  

One current event is the push for "gay marriage."  Big deal, right?  The assumption is "why not..?  If they want that, who cares.?"  Well, there are those who world state power who are very nasty characters, plus shifting political winds.   Does anyone remember the "AIDS crisis"?  Castro responded to the epidemic by imprisoning those afflicted.  That is one political response.

The term Patient Zero refers to the 'hub' of an epidemiological study conducted very early on in the epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The study traced the sexual contacts of one group of gay men with AIDS who had had sex with each other before anyone knew that AIDS was caused by a virus, or realized that it had already been with us for at least a decade, if not decades.

Dugas didn't bring AIDS to Vancouver. The first death occurred in 1981. But people here were growing frightened as gay men returning from trips to New York and San Francisco brought back one horror story after another.

The Tuskegee Experiments, run by the CDC, were ended about 1973.  Nobody went to prison, nobody was hanged.  Quite the contrary.  Perpetrators went on to bigger and better things.

Within a few years of ending the Tuskegee Experiments, the first death from a virus/cancer was recorded.  Aids.  Which by the way kills far more black Africans than USA gays, because the medicine is so expensive.  The CDC was in on the study of AIDS very early on. Odd that, when they tend to miss everything else.

The state offers a platform for those with lethal agendas to play them out.  When political winds get behind one side or another, things get lethal.  They do even if most Americans would have objected to the Tuskegee Experiments, the crime went on.  There is simply no mechanism to check abuse by individual state workers, especially when the conspire.  "Mistakes were made, now it is time to move forward."

There will be a political backlash in time to "gay marriage."  When it gets down to selling your gay friends down the river, I know what I will do... I'll sell them down the river.  We all do.  The time to conscientiously object is now.  Say no now so we won't have to turn them in later.

Of course it may never happen, but such events happen all the time.  We sell people who self-medicate down the river, we sell people who are here "illegally" (as if wanting to work or visit your family is a crime) down the river, why not more so gays?

Resist accepting power you would not want your enemies to have.

Cotton Gin and Conscientious Objection

Business and politics are tightly intertwined, and I found myself getting political on my business blog.   As a conscientious objector, my politics are anarchistic, in the academic sense of the word.  over at my business blog, I was expositing on bank-and-IPR-free industrial development when I found myself getting very political...  so I extricated digressions and deposited them here...

On the topic of the cotton gin, I noted:

And the price of cotton dropped dramatically, so now middle class could start to wear it.  Since the USA at the time respected neither property rights nor human rights, disasters followed.  Slavery got a new lease on life as cotton became more profitable for slavers, and more land was put under cotton.  Cotton is notorious land fertility depleter, so slavers needed to move West. This led to conflict with Mexico, and in turn to the USA invasion and seizure of Mexican lands for cotton growers.  As Thoreau lamented, democracy allows for a very few to get the many into war.

That cotton gin that gave slavery a new lease on life, and subsequently brought us the war on Mexico, led to the USA civil war.  According to General Grant:

"The Southern rebellion was largely the outgrowth of the Mexican War.  Nations, like individuals, are punished for their transgressions.  We got our punishment in the most sanguinary and expensive war of modern times."

(Written in the 1880s as Grant reflected on a war in which he fought in the 1840s.)

So the cotton gin was a good thing showing up at the wrong time and place.  War followed in its wake.

This war was waged subsequent to a regime that protected slavery and disrespected property rights.  None suffered more after this war than the American Indians and citizens of some African heritage. Had we respected property rights, certainly the Chickasaw would have had the option of farming and earning, but since they were the last of the Confederates to surrender n the Civil war, their nation was targeted for particularly robust land loss. As to Americans of some African ancestry, land ownership was threatened by disenfranchised whites.  

In any case, no doubt small farmers would conserve their land better than larger slavers, who had the political clout to simply deplete and steal.  If the state did not violently enforce slavery and land theft, surely results would have been different.  But the fact of the matter is USA had both, so we have to look to other times and places where slavery was not enforced and property rights were respected.  Nothing comes to mind.  

But we do know in history, in the 19th century, some 18 other countries rid themselves of slavery without war.  And in these countries people of African heritage find themselves less constrained in opportunity than in USA. 

As a side note, a point I’ve made before, slaves had more opportunity to be productive in USA as slaves than they ever have been since they were “freed.”  Their experience as slaves, that is within two generations of being slave-born cultural primitives, they were shoulder to shoulder with pioneers of the industrial revolution, contradicts the scientific rascists who tell us people of African heritage are inferior humans.  What took the West thousands of years to develop in terms of culture Africans were able to possess within two generations.

Are Africans, therefore, superhuman?  No, it just shows ideas matter.  If you get the ideas right, they will work for everyone.  The most peaceful, prosperous places on earth are where several languages are spoken at once, law is performance based, and generally unbiased.

Unfortunately, the progressives got the upper hand in the 19th century and Lincoln and his followers tried to rearrange USA by violence.  The contributions of African Americans were circumscribed as a result of the war, and the Indians were the target of the war machine left over from the civil war.  The concentration camps for Indians became the model for Germany within 50 years.

Getting the ideas right matter.

Human Sacrifice

Why would a woman want to serve in the military; why would a woman want to be in a front line combat role?

Now, the next question is, clearly nothing in that answer is as challenging, interesting, valuable, appreciated or needed as the role of wife and mother, something only a woman could do.

So why would a woman settle for less?

If the role of wife and mother is so denigrated, and the security of wives and mothers so attenuated that being a soldier is preferable, then it can make sense a woman would prefer to be a soldier than a wife and mother.

In centuries to come we'll be thought of as having so abandoned women and children in law and culture that women volunteered to fight on the front lines.

This is madness.

Who Planted The Bullets?

One of Ron Paul's staffers and a delegate to the Republican Convention found Hotel Security reporting there had been three unauthorized entries into her room.  Nothing seemed to be amiss until later that day when getting on an airplane TSA found bullets in her carry-on luggage.  Clearly someone broke into her room and planted the bullets.  All suspicions are on the Republicans.

But wait.  Look at the video interviewing her.  Look at the introduction.  Look at the fellow making the intro and a pitch for Ron Paulian unity.  The look at the wall behind him, and the picture of a pistol, grenade, Folding knife and AK47 spelling out LOVE.  Ron Paul's logo was rEVOLution.

For all the time I spent with Paulians, there were plenty of gun advocates, the serious, sober kind, none of whom would associate weapons with love.  The picture is in very bad taste, and tone deaf.

Anyone could have planted those bullets, even a kid who wants to keep the party going, with a cause celebre, or even a kid who is working for the bad guys.

Anyone who advocates violence, one way or another, is working for the State.

He concisely summarized Marighella’s strategy as the use of relentless violence against the innocent in order to provoke an "authoritarian turn to the right" – the imposition of dictatorial measures and the consolidation of power by a State apparatus that will fall into the hands of the revolutionaries.

War On People By Medicine

Killing people is seen as necessary by some, and pre-emptive war is just in such people's mind.  The Nazi party led Germany against an abject fear of Bolshevism, not unfounded since while Hitler rose in power the Bolsheviks were starving to death 5 million Ukrainians in the Голодомор.  Germany was next.  Germany's error was violence, and pre-emptive strikes (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Soviet Union).  This response turned out very bad for Germany.

National Socialism was a workers party, and admired by many in England.  Keynes recommended his economic plan to the nazi party in his foreword in the German language edition.  Here George Bernard Shaw, english playwrite (My Fair Lady) recommends the elimination of many in society, if they cannot justify their existence to people like him. Circa 1930.

He called for a gas to be made to kill the weak.  The Germans listened. Today a Secretary of Health in USA is calling for elimination of kids through abortion and abortifacients.  No person, no problem. The goal is to decide who lives and who dies, as decided by the State.  This 2012.

War, Spies and Cultural Understandings

Here is episode 7 of a 12 part series on Soviet TV from 1973 telling a story of a top Soviet Agent working in Hitler's secret service. being Russian, and 1973, it is black and white and in Russian, but it has English subtitles.  The entire thing is fascinating, but episode 7 is particularly good as people argue politics, right and wrong, from various viewpoints.  The Soviet view of USA is especially good, and the perfidy of USA CIA, the story of which must be classified in USA but not in Russia, is very uninteresting, but not surprising, if true. Even Switzerland neutrality figures in.

One aspect is just how much harm is done by so many competing factions, especially as they get closer to losing.  A cornered dog, and all that.  It's a little over an hour, but worth the4 viewing.  This was put out by the Russian Communist party in 1973, which gives you a good sense of their view of the world at that time.  I was visiting Soviet ships visiting Seattle circa 71, 72, 73... and this seems more liberal than I recall...  but them the sailors were surprisingly liberal, in any case not as USA media portrayed them.  Of course.
